On the way home from Secaucus, I remembered that today is the SHUA Group Performance at Canco Lofts. I wasn’t going to watch, but I decided to stop by to see what was going on there (time was 530PM)

When I turned to St. Paul’s Street, and hit Tonnele Ave, I noticed a few banners hanging on the posts that say “CancoLofts Arts Exhibit” with an arrow directing to the building’s location so I followed it. I arrived there and parked my old Honda in a parking lot across the building.

I was greeted by a nice lady at the desk. So I asked about the Arts Exhibit. She pointed me to another room where there was a sign board that says “CancoLofts Sales Center”. She told me there was a snack and to make myself comfortable.

I was not sure if it is the same as the Arts Exhibit, so I just proceeded anyway and took some pictures:

CancoLofts Residents Club Amenities. Can you read it?

CancoLofts snacks on the center table. I didn’t feel like nibbling anything.

A billiard table on the other side of the Sales Center room. I doubt if this is “THE” billiard table.

In case you can’t read it, it says: CANCOLofts – Where history and modernity meet. Where space inspires imagination.

By the way, I wasn’t interested in buying a unit so I didn’t bother asking for a price. I’m sorry if you are expecting a number-crunching report.

—–

Personally, I think CANCOlofts is a very good place to live in if you have money. I am not from that area, but you don’t have to be there for a long time to see that CANCO is the only nice building in that community. Who knows? Maybe this is the start of something innovative there, as far as buildings are concerned. (If you live near there, what can you say about the place?)

So, did you go there for the grand opening of CANCOLofts? I hope you also watched the first installation of Public Acts by SHUA Group. If you missed it, there’s still another one coming (Public Acts “FULL”) on March 1, 2008. It is the last of the series, so make sure to make it.

I wonder if a lot of people here in Jersey City are in to interdisciplinary art, because Jersey City Museum and local performance company “Shua Group”, will present Public Acts.

For the uninformed, Public Acts is

“the result of three years of intensive collaboration between Shua Group and French visual artist Sylvestre Gobart. Working together, Shua Group and Gobart have created a performance and exhibition project that allow audiences to experiences their performance in unique and intimate ways.”

This event sounds classy and new to me. And even state wide press like The New Jersey Star Ledger has said something good about Shua Group: “Uncertainty about the performers’ identities was balanced by the surprise of recognizing a dancer posed casually, absorbing the people nearby into a choreographic design.”

So if you are interested in watching Public Acts, there will be two parts for this event:

Part 1 – Soft Wall – Saturday February 23, 2008 at 7:00PM – a subtle weaving together of performance, improvisation, movement, intuition, and audience response.

Part II – Full – March 1, 2008 at 7:00pm – a sound and video installation exhibiting a group emptying thousands of cardboard boxes.

If you would like to know more of the differences between the two, follow this link.

Both events will take place at Canco Lofts (few blocks away from Journal Square) at 50 Dey Street, Jersey City 07306. If you are taking a PATH train from either Newark or NYC, get off the Journal Square station, exit to Kennedy Boulevard. You can walk (10-15 minutes) to Canco Lofts or take a shuttle bus (5 minutes ride).

Admission for Public Acts is free, and here’s an added bonus: wine will be served for both events!

Is there anyone here who has seen the group performed? If you did, what can you say about them? Feel free to post your comments, we would be glad to hear from you.

Otherwise, let us know here on JCRegister.com if you are going to see Public Acts, which is made possible by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation.
