I know a lot of Jersey City residents work in Manhattan, NYC so you probably know that there was an explosion at Times Square Plaza at 42nd Street and 7th Avenue in New York. According to the news I was watching, it happened 4am today, March 6, 2008.

A man in a gray hoodie planted a bomb at Armed Forces Recruitment Center then flee away in a bicycle. Lots of police are investigating the explosion and Times Square has been shut down as of this writing. (6th and 8th are also shutdown).

However, subways and trains have been restored.

Everything I have posted is from CBS 2 News. So if there are any errors, let me know.

UPDATE 6:35AM : Broadway Avenue and 8th have been re-opened to motorists and pedestrians; manhunt continues.

A thread on Jersey City List (JCList) says that there was an explosion at Grove Street and Columbus Drive.

“A 1 PM explosion occurred in front of the Subway and GNC stores. The explosion shook the ground setting off car alarms. A second later a cloud of smoke emerged from the grate. All the while, people looked aimlessly around for clues and the police. Most were perplexed and waited for the help to arrive.

Five minutes later, we heard the first of five or 6 fire sirens in the distant to arrive at the site. Thank goodness for our Homeland Security … looks like money well spent.

We think it is most likely a transformer explosion, but it would be nice to know what exactly happened. Any one with information, please post. Thanks.”

Few minutes later, another member (named GrovePath) posted that it was indeed an underground transformer blast. He also reported that PSE&G, police, and firemen are at the site taking care of the damage. One lady was shaken up, but no other information is posted yet.

Accident? What caused it?
