In the previous years, Catholic Schools Week (CSW) had a sub-theme representing each day of the week. It seems to me that the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) is leaning towards a single general theme for the entire week.

This event is popular to students, particularly to middle schoolers. During this week, schools hold various activities and contests; and winners will get the chance to represent their schools in a state-wide contest such as the Spelling Bee (sponsored by the Jersey Journal). One school in downtown Jersey City (The Resurrection School) will be holding a Spelling Bee for their students.

As we already know, the number of Catholic Schools are declining not only in Hudson County, but across the United States.

Catholic Schools Week is also an opportunity for the schools to “market” their education system. For instance, administrators will host OPEN HOUSE inviting parents and other prospects to their schools and allow them to take a look at their buildings, curriculum, students, teachers, and school atmosphere. It is an ideal time to showcase the school’s strengths to entice parents to enroll their kids to the school like what St. Francis Academy in Union City has been doing.

Similarly, St. Dominic’s Academy (High School) on Kennedy Boulevard (McGinley Square Area) will hold a “Mothers’ Club Teacher Appreciation Breakfast” on February 3, while St. Joseph School (Elementary) on Pavonia-Baldwin-Magnolia Avenue in Journal Square will be having an “International Day” on the 31st of January.

Catholic Schools Week is celebrated nationally the last week in January, this year Jan. 26-31.

The logo for the observance shows the words “Celebrate Service” and hands reaching out and surrounding a globe. The “t” in the word celebrate is formed as a cross.

Students look forward to this event. Schools typically celebrate Catholic Schools Week with masses, open houses and activities for students, administrators, faculty, school staff, the community and families. As for Jersey City, schools usually observe their cultural diversities by hosting an “international day”.

If you want to send your child to a Catholic School, make sure to check out your prospective schools’ Open House schedule. You’ll have a chance to take a look at their curriculum, students, faculty and staff, and general atmosphere.
