December 5th, 2008 is JCFridays

This coming Friday - December 5, 2008 - is the last installment of JCFridays for this year.

What is JCFridays?

If you still don’t know it yet, JCFridays is a quarterly city-wide event here in Jersey City, held on the first Friday at the start of every season. JCFridays is an exhibition of culture and arts in JC filled with fun and educational programs that are open for public. The next JCFridays will be March next year.

What to Expect

Expect a day full of fun and educational events categorized into four types: art, performance, music, and film. The events will be in different places and the time will be over-lapping. So make sure you choose some that interest you the most then have fun.

One thing I noticed about JCFridays is majority of the participants are from Downtown, JC. Here are some events held in other areas of JC: two will be in the Heights area - courtesy of The Kennedy Dancers and Hello Again Vintage; One in Journal Square area at 32 Jones Street. Two more in McGinley area: IMAGO BEAUTY GROUP and DUDA PENTEADO FINE ART STUDIO.

Happy Thanksgiving to all! Remember to give thanks for everything that you have. Are you going to volunteer in some JC Thanksgiving events? Are you going away to spend more time with family and relatives? Whatever you do, enjoy your holiday and stay safe!

PARKING RULES/REGULATIONS

Street parking rules and street sweeping are suspended for today (November 27 and Tomorrow - Friday after Thanksgiving - November 28). So you do not have to move your car. If you want to be sure, call the Jersey City Parking Authority (JCPA) at (201)653-6969 and/or the JCIA at (201)432-4645 x 675. If nobody from JCPA is picking up, it means they’re closed. Trump as JC Street?

Last week, northbergenreporter.com reported that JC City Council is considering an ordinance to rename a small portion of Morgan Street in Downtown Jersey City to “Trump Plaza”.

Why? Well, the reason behind this is the “Trump Plaza: Jersey City“, the multi-million project on Washington Boulevard named after the celebrity Donald Trump.

The City Council thinks “it is both fitting and appropriate to commemorate the importance of these projects.”

However, I have read several JC residents feel otherwise. What has Trump done in and for Jersey City to deserve a street name?

Jersey City Gas Prices: November 22, 2008

Last summer, gas prices soared to approximately $4 per gallon forcing gas stations to not accept credit cards anymore.

Don’t look now, gas prices are now below $2! In just four (4) months, the decrease in price went down by more than 50%.

Veterans’ Day 2008: Events and Parking Regulations

Today, we honor the courageous veterans who fought for our country. There are some Veterans Day events in NJ like the Veterans Day dedication ceremony of the new Trenton World War II Memorial. Veterans will get FREE NJ transit rides going there.

Also, at 12 noon here in Jersey City, The 1st Annual “Honoring our Veteran’s” Ceremony at the historic Jersey City & Harismus Cemetery will take place at 435 Newark Avenue.

BALLY Fitness: NOW HIRING

BALLY FITNESS on Bergen Avenue, Journal Square section of Jersey City is now hiring. But I guess the more important question is: When is BALLY really going to open?

Many residents were anticipating the November opening, but according to JournalSquareJC.com blog, opening date will be moved again since interior construction is not finished yet.

Journal Square: Water Main Shut Off

[Update 1:10pm] Portion of Summit Avenue (from Summit-Newkirk to Summit-Sip) is not passable as the repairs took both lanes. Click map below for the affected areas of the water repair.

Do you live in Journal Square area of Jersey City? Do you have any friends there? Weekly, starting today, water main will be shut off according to United Water as they will replace six valves. This will go on for one month (Until December 6).

Here’s the schedule (+ affected areas) of the repair:

November 8, 2008 -> Newkirk Street between Summit Avenue and Baldwin Avenue, and on Summit Avenue between Academy Street and Sip Avenue. (See map above, “T”-area)

November 15, 2008 -> Summit Avenue and Newkirk Street

November 22, 2008 -> Summit Avenue and Academy Street

December 6, 2008 -> Baldwin Avenue and Newkirk

Local Artist at Work

Yesterday afternoon, while Jersey City and the rest of the nation were occupied with presidential election (Obama won, in case you didn’t know ), I spotted a local artist in Journal Square area painting a tree. I asked if I could take his pictures and he approved.

I asked him a few questions; I learned that his name is Steve Singer, and he is a local artist and a sculptor. This painting however, will not go to any exhibit yet. Since he was too engaged with his work, I let him be. “You can find me on the internet.” he said before I left.
