Full Moon Illusion Tonight

Moonrise over Jersey City
November 2006 moonrise photo by: designknob. See larger picture here.

Tonight, we are going to a see a HUGE MOON, bigger than its normal size. However, it’s just an illusion according to the news.

What is the Full Moon Illusion?

The moon illusion, as it’s known, is a trick in our minds that makes the moon seem bigger when it’s near the horizon. The effect is most pronounced at full moon. Many people swear it’s real, suggesting that perhaps Earth’s atmosphere magnifies the moon.

When is the Best Time To Look Up

Moonrise times vary by location. On Wednesday, it will come up at these local times at these locations, according to NASA: New York City, 8:58 p.m.; Miami, 8:35 p.m.; Seattle, 9:51 p.m.

How’s the weather?
Right now, the weather in Jersey City looks A-okay: bright and sunny with clouds. Unfortunately, the forecast says we’re going to have thunderstorm this afternoon onwards. This is the day when you wish the forecast is completely inaccurate. So save your raindance for the summer. :P

Severe Thunderstorm in Jersey City
Radar map not clickable.

It looks bad outside: gray, dark, thick clouds, winds — all indications of severe thunderstorm, not only in Jersey City, but for the rest of Hudson County and other tri-state areas.

See below some pictures of Journal Square under thick clouds!

Weather: Chance of Storm June 16, 2008

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Weather June 16 2008 Chance of stormIt looked sunny out there, but the forecast says there’s a chance of storm beginning this afternoon. So I hope you brought your umbrella with you.

Commute was easy this morning, but expect a messy one this evening rush hour if the storm continues to head to Jersey City.

Look at the picture on the left. The storm starts at 1PM if the forecast is accurate, it will extend through the night. I’m not sure what the red border around the forecast means, but it definitely looks scary.

Temperature will reach the high 70’s to low 80’s.

Enjoy your day!

Weather: No More Heat? June 11, 2008 (+ School Closings)

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

I Survived the HeatIf the forecast is correct, today is going to be cooler or colder in Jersey City. It’s not cold “cold”, but temperature is down compared to the past 4 days when we experienced excessive heat. Simply put, it’s still hot (in the 80’s) but not as hot as yesterday.

How did you cope with the heat wave these past days? I believe we are all survivors, so now I am proposing a shirt that says “I Survived The Heat!” Somebody gotta make that one!

With the spring sizzler almost gone, the only worry left for us is the PATH trouble. Hopefully, no more “fire” in the tunnel in the next 2 years. I heard somebody said doubtful. :P

Enjoy your day!
