Full Moon Illusion Tonight

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

Moonrise over Jersey City
November 2006 moonrise photo by: designknob. See larger picture here.

Tonight, we are going to a see a HUGE MOON, bigger than its normal size. However, it’s just an illusion according to the news.

What is the Full Moon Illusion?

The moon illusion, as it’s known, is a trick in our minds that makes the moon seem bigger when it’s near the horizon. The effect is most pronounced at full moon. Many people swear it’s real, suggesting that perhaps Earth’s atmosphere magnifies the moon.

When is the Best Time To Look Up

Moonrise times vary by location. On Wednesday, it will come up at these local times at these locations, according to NASA: New York City, 8:58 p.m.; Miami, 8:35 p.m.; Seattle, 9:51 p.m.

How’s the weather?
Right now, the weather in Jersey City looks A-okay: bright and sunny with clouds. Unfortunately, the forecast says we’re going to have thunderstorm this afternoon onwards. This is the day when you wish the forecast is completely inaccurate. So save your raindance for the summer. :P

Weather: Chance of Storm June 16, 2008

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Weather June 16 2008 Chance of stormIt looked sunny out there, but the forecast says there’s a chance of storm beginning this afternoon. So I hope you brought your umbrella with you.

Commute was easy this morning, but expect a messy one this evening rush hour if the storm continues to head to Jersey City.

Look at the picture on the left. The storm starts at 1PM if the forecast is accurate, it will extend through the night. I’m not sure what the red border around the forecast means, but it definitely looks scary.

Temperature will reach the high 70’s to low 80’s.

Enjoy your day!

Weather: No More Heat? June 11, 2008 (+ School Closings)

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

I Survived the HeatIf the forecast is correct, today is going to be cooler or colder in Jersey City. It’s not cold “cold”, but temperature is down compared to the past 4 days when we experienced excessive heat. Simply put, it’s still hot (in the 80’s) but not as hot as yesterday.

How did you cope with the heat wave these past days? I believe we are all survivors, so now I am proposing a shirt that says “I Survived The Heat!” Somebody gotta make that one!

With the spring sizzler almost gone, the only worry left for us is the PATH trouble. Hopefully, no more “fire” in the tunnel in the next 2 years. I heard somebody said doubtful. :P

Enjoy your day!

Heat wave is still on in Jersey City. How are you coping with it? Temperature will go in to the high 90’s but it will feel like 100 degrees! Reports say that the heat wave is going to end tomorrow (Tuesday, June 10, 2008).

It’s so hot today that some schools in New Jersey have early closings today. Our Lady Of Mt Carmel in Passaic for instance will use “early release” starting at 12:30 PM. On the other hand, Freehold Boro Elementary District in Freehold will have an early closing.

In Jersey City, however, schools will follow their normal schedules.

First Heat Wave Arriving (and Some Survival Tips!)

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Heat Wave in Jersey CityPrepare for a steamy weekend starting tomorrow, June 07, 2008. Forecasts say that the first heat wave in Jersey City will be arriving.

Let’s look at the numbers for the next five days:

Date Temp
Sat (6/7) 96
Sun (6/8) 95
Mon (6/9) 94
Tue (6/10) 89
Wed (6/11) 83

I’m not a math genius, but by simply looking at the numbers above, I could tell that the average temperature for the next five days is above 90 degrees!

As a matter of fact, NJ’s Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) released an email to urge residents take steps to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

“…The National Weather Service is predicting prolonged hot and humid weather on the East Coast that will begin Saturday and last through mid-week…”

Survival Tips to avoid health complications from excessive heat: (per DHSS)

  • Drink plenty of water or other non-alcoholic beverages.
  • Make sure children and the elderly are drinking water, and ensure that persons with mobility problems have adequate fluids in easy reach.
  • If you do not have air conditioning, spend time in air-conditioned places such as libraries, movies, malls or other public buildings during the hottest hours of the day.
  • Wear loose and light-colored clothing. Wear a hat when outdoors.
  • Reduce physical activity or reschedule it for cooler times of the day.
  • Don’t leave children, a frail elderly or disabled person, or pets in an enclosed car — not even for a minute — as temperatures can quickly climb to dangerous levels.
  • Talk to your health care provider about any medicine or drugs you are taking. Certain medications — such as tranquilizers and drugs used to treat Parkinson’s disease — can increase the risk of heat-related illness.

For more information on preventing heat-related illness, please visit the DHSS web site at www.nj.gov/health/eoh/hhazweb/cool.htm.
