The NEW PATH Cars will be officially launched at 12:30PM today at Journal Square PATH Station, according to a post in New York Times blog. NJ Governor Jon Corzine will join PATH officials in the ceremonial launch and a train of new rail cars will take a 10-minute ride from Journal Square to Hoboken, and then back.

The New PATH PA-5 Rail Cars feature the following:

• Additional Doors – three sets of doors on each side allow for faster entrance and exit

• Onboad Digital Displays – provide news and information to passengers

• In-Car Digital Signs – LED displays show next stop, final destination and time

• External Digital Signs – easy to read signs indicating train line

• Enhanced Suspension – provides smoother ride

• Security Cameras – for your enhanced security

• Emergency Intercom System – allows emergency communication with train crew

• Automated Announcements – clear announcements of stations, transfers and delays

For commute and travel, more buses and trains will be added to accommodate the travelers and revelers, according to the Jersey Journal.

Personally, I’d rather stay in a quiet place or celebrate with family and friends here in Jersey City than to travel to Times Square and watch the giant ball go down.

Skipping out of work early to celebrate New Year’s Eve? Hoping to catch a lift home from New York City’s Times Square after midnight?

Travelers this holiday evening and early tomorrow will find extra buses, extra trains and additional trips being added to normal weekly schedules to accommodate them throughout New Jersey and New York City.

NJ Transit, for example, is operating 54 late-night trains after midnight and late-night bus service from the Port Authority Bus Terminal to assist revelers returning from Times Square and other points in New York.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey also will add trains to its regularly weekly schedule today on the PATH service.

Before midnight, the frequency of train service for the return trip from New York, via the Journal Square to 33rd Street by the Hoboken Line, also will be increased and run on a 10-minute schedule for passengers.

PATH service will run on a Sunday schedule for New Year’s Day. Visit the NJ Transit Web site at www.njtransit.com to check bus and train schedules for today, tomorrow and the rest of the week. Schedules vary by route. The PATH schedules may be found on the Port Authority Web site at www.panynj.gov.
