At 3rd and Brunswick (out side Madam Claude’s), you will see a decorated tree which he names “Mylar Tree”.

Here’s his message sent via email:

“I know it has been a long time since I did any public art stunt… This weekend Monica and I were able to decorate a tree. A few passerby
asked curiously why but it was pretty low key. However, at one point I
was up in the tree and a cop car put on his sirens and sped towards
us… I thought, okay here we go!.. but then he turned off his
siren/lights just as he got close… so I guess they liked it…”

Hopefully, the decorations stay up despite the strong winds and heavy downpour.

Today, several residents gathered in front of Martin Luther King, Jr. School (PS 11) on Bergen Avenue (few blocks from Journal Square PATH Station) and rallied for a better education. Kids and adults were marching in front of PS-11 chanting “Education not incarceration!”

Below is a short clip of the event:

The rally was organized by “Parents and Communities United for Education” (PCUE) — the Jersey City chapter of “Statewide Education Organizing Committee” (SEOCNJ), whose objective is to make community (particularly the parents) more involved in the education of their children.

There are 6 ideals* that the group is fighting for …

A Tutoring Center – a tutoring center in each high school so that it can assist students who are falling through the cracks, to catch up and move forward.

Guidance Counselor – PCUE believes that a face to face quarterly meeting with students can help them “flowchart” their career.

Scholarship Fund – to assist undocumented immigrant children planning to go to college

A School District that Listens – PCUE wants a school district that listens to the parents and allows them to evaluate their chirldren’s school.

Annual Report Card – PCUE believes that an annual report card will show the progress of the children’s learning.

More communication – PCUE believes that the school district should make a serious effort to deliver information to the parents in languages they can fully understand to strengthen “parent support”

*These ideals were taken from the flyers that PCUE organizers were handing out to people during their rally.
