Caven Point Is Getting a New Field

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

caven_point_field.jpg

Jersey city’s Caven Point Field was shut down last April due to high level of lead. Reports said that City Council has awarded $1.3 million contract to J.A. Alexander, Inc. of Bloomfield to install a new synthetic field at the heavily used stadium.

Last month, the NFL donated $200 thousand for the replacement of the field, which is expected to finish by September 1st.

Bedbugs in JC!

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Bedbugs at Grandview terrace, Jersey City
Tenants of Grandview Terrace have been dealing with the bugs for 3 years already!

The Jersey Journal reports that there are bedbug infestations in Hudson County, and one of the buildings here in JC “had nearly 50 cases of bedbugs in the past three years.” The worst part is, the tenants are asked to shoulder the bill ($300) to exterminate the pests. The tenants of Grandview Terrace who earn on a fixed income, said they can’t afford it.

Personally, I would pay that amount under the agreement that the owner will reimburse my money or would deduct it from my monthly rent. However, there’s no guarantee that bedbugs will go away; they would simply transfer from one unit to another without you knowing it.

If you are having bites and do not know the cause, you might want to check out your sofa and beds/matress for bedbug presence.

Wikipedia describes the feeding habits of bedbugs:

“…Bedbugs are generally active only at dawn, with a peak attack period about an hour before sunrise. They may attempt to feed at other times, however, given the opportunity, and have been observed to feed at any time of the day…. After feeding for about five minutes, the bug returns to its hiding place….” more info

Mugging at Walgreens Parking Lot

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Mugging at Walgreens Parking Lot
Somewhere in this parking lot, a woman was mugged by 3 women.

Walgreen’s makes the crime news again.

A week ago, a lady was successful in preventing an attempted carjacking. Yesterday, however, one woman fell victim to three women/muggers at the same location. Reports said that the 22-year-old was getting into her car when the muggers assaulted her, then took her belongings and valuables. Suspects are still on the loose.

Are there any surveillance cameras installed in this area? When will the Jersey City Police assign more cops to this corner?

More in this news.

Broadway Gas Station - Ca$h Only!

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Broadway Gas Station Cash Only
Streetview of Broadway Gas Station (Broadway and Route 1 & 9, Jersey City)

I always go to ULTRA GAS STATION for cheap gas, but last Sunday, my father recommended Broadway Gas Station. He said they accept credit/debit cards. So I was annoyed when I went there and saw the signs that read: CASH ONLY. “When did this happen?” I asked the guy working there, and he said “two days ago.”

Result?

I drove 3-5 blocks for refueling at ULTRA GAS STATION. They have the same gas price ($3.86) as the Broadway Gas Station during that time, they accept credit/debit cards, and the place is much convenient for me.

Where do you go for cheap gas?

Philippine-American Friendship Day Cut Short

Monday, June 30th, 2008

The Philippine-American Friendship Day Festival was cut short yesterday (June 29, 2008) due to the storm that started around 230PM. The lingering thunderstorm also spoiled the most awaited Filipino Idol Grand Finals.

It was actually warm yesterday morning and the sun was shining. The thunderstorm forecast appeared to be inaccurate, as the Filipinos walked from Montgomery Street to Exchange Place.

Then thick clouds began to cover Exchange Place and the rain poured all of the sudden as people ran for cover.

Strong winds toppled tents and booths. Some were unlucky to get wet, and even the guest singer Mig Ayesa was unable to stay dry. Reports said that there a few people got injured because of the fallen tents.

Old Mansion Featured on Jersey Journal

House Restoration Summit Avenue and Manhattan Avenue, Jersey City
Streetview here.

This old mansion at Summit Avenue and Manhattan Avenue was featured today on nj.com. I always pass by this house in the Heights area JC when I go to work in Union City, but I had no idea that it is century old already and it has a historical significance.

Read the JJ to learn more about the house that was erected 100 years ago.

Bergen Avenue Buses, Doubled

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Remember the Bayonne-based Bergen Avenue Bus Company? They were only running 2 buses (out of 14) because the rest failed in inspection conducted by MVC.

Eversince, riders had complained that the service was “terrible”, and they had to wait extended hours for the bus.

The good news yesterday was that the company is expecting four (or five) buses back on the road today. After a quick call at their office, I learned that four buses are now in full operation.

Now let’s wait and see how commuters will respond.

The company’s 411 is listed below in case you want to call them…

Sequel: Show Me No Money

Thursday, June 26th, 2008

Show Me No Money - Bribery of local jersey city official
For illustration purpose only.

Same star, new antagonist.

Last month, our leading man Jersey City fire inspector Matt Barrett rejected a $500 bribe from the owner of the burnt building on St. Paul’s Avenue. Mr. Barrett called the cops and had the owner arrested.

Yesterday, Mr. Barrett was again offered a bribe despite the presence of a cop. 39-years old Kevin Bassit - owner of Fairmont Terrace - was arrested on the spot for trying to bribe Mr. Barrett hoping the latter would erase the violations found on the former’s building.

Here’s the kicker: Kevin had read the story of the failed bribery last month and was aware of the consequences.

Which makes me wonder: Why did he even try? Does Mr. Barrett look “bribe-able” (if there’s such a term) to him?
