Last month, the NFL donated $200 thousand for the replacement of the field, which is expected to finish by September 1st.

The Jersey Journal reports that there are bedbug infestations in Hudson County, and one of the buildings here in JC “had nearly 50 cases of bedbugs in the past three years.” The worst part is, the tenants are asked to shoulder the bill ($300) to exterminate the pests. The tenants of Grandview Terrace who earn on a fixed income, said they can’t afford it.
Personally, I would pay that amount under the agreement that the owner will reimburse my money or would deduct it from my monthly rent. However, there’s no guarantee that bedbugs will go away; they would simply transfer from one unit to another without you knowing it.
If you are having bites and do not know the cause, you might want to check out your sofa and beds/matress for bedbug presence.
Wikipedia describes the feeding habits of bedbugs:
“…Bedbugs are generally active only at dawn, with a peak attack period about an hour before sunrise. They may attempt to feed at other times, however, given the opportunity, and have been observed to feed at any time of the day…. After feeding for about five minutes, the bug returns to its hiding place….” more info…

A charity baseball game between two hospitals was held two Fridays ago (June 13, 2008) and our very own JCMC won the match. I asked the photographer (devine338/Sonia Pagan) about it and she provided me with this information:

Seven of 335 water sources in seven Jersey City public schools have elevated levels of lead, according to the first results of last month’s water tests by the Jersey City Board of Education (JCBOE). So your might need to give your children their own bottled water if they go to one of those 7 schools in the news.
JCBOE’s letter to the parents is posted here in case you lost your own. It contains the specific details of the test they conducted last month so be sure to read it again.

A public health advisory was released this afternoon warning consumers to refrain from eating certain types of raw red tomatoes. According to FDA, “a salmonellosis outbreak appears to be linked to consumption of certain types of raw red tomatoes and products containing raw red tomatoes”
At this time, FDA is advising consumers to limit their consumption of tomatoes to the following types of tomatoes. The following types of tomatoes listed below are NOT likely to be the source of this outbreak.

UPDATE (July 03, 2008): Caven Point is getting a new field.
—–
Original Post: June 09, 2008
Caven Point Field was shut down last April due to high level of lead, and it would require a huge amount of money to replace the field.
…“The field at Cochrane Stadium, which is also used for baseball games, was shut down in April after test showed lead concentrations in the soil as high as 12 times as what’s allowed by the state“….
Good thing is, NFL donates $200,000 for the replacement/refurbishment of the field.
“Fields are an integral part of creating viable and health communities,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “The development and refurbishment of these football fields gives youngsters across the country a safe place to play the game, and brings families and neighborhoods together.“
Give props to NFL for showing Jersey City some love! *banana dance icon*

So I symphatize with the residents of Avalon Cove Apartment when they complained about the roaches in their units.
…Andrea Sparrey, who lives on the fourth floor, said a neighbor returned from vacation about 10 days ago and found the infestation. The neighbor moved into an apartment on the third floor, she said.
Since the apartment was vacated, Sparrey said, she has been finding at least three to five roaches a day in her apartment; on Thursday morning, she killed 10 in her apartment before 8 a.m….
At least 5 roaches a day? Wow.
It sounded like this has been going on for quite some time. Residents had complained via Avalon’s website, but Avalon Cove said they had no record of complaints. Management also said that they have weekly exterminator service, but it seems like it’s not enough, as the residents still see some roaches in the hallway.

McDonald’s is promoting their chicken menu by offering freebies:
- free chicken biscuit morning (breakfast)
- free chicken sandwich afternoon (lunch)
I called a couple of McDonald’s in Jersey City and they confirmed. As long as you buy medium or large drinks, you get a freebie.
Some sites say that it’s going to start at 11am, but the Central Avenue branch that I called told me that the promotion starts at 1030AM. (Ends at 2PM)
If you know exact details, please feel free to post in the comments.

I already called a couple of Dunkin Donuts branches here in Jersey City to verify, and they confirmed the event.
Would be interesting to see how many people would lineup for a free small (16 ounce) cup of original or flavored iced coffee.
