Guy is in Gee and his wife were in Journal Square a couple of weeks ago when they met Tom. Read his story about Tom below:
“As my wife and I killed time near Journal Square in Jersey City we came across Tom. He had this great big smile on his face. I said “hello’, and after a few pleasantries, Tom asked if we could spare some change so he could get something to eat. I said we would do better than that, we’d take him to a nearby Burger King and buy him a burger. He gladly accepted the offer, and on the way to BK he had second thoughts. “Would you mind if we went to Dunkin’ Donuts instead, I like their pizza”. No problem.
We went with Tom into Dunkin’ Donuts and he ordered pizza and coffee.
While we waited, Tom told us that he had just gotten out of the hospital and still was in a bit of pain, and had catheters hooked up to him. But he rarely stopped smiling.
Tom was born in Atlanta, and had moved to New Jersey when he was 6 months old.”

Tom is #30 in Guy’s 100 Strangers project, which is a photo challenge to take 100 portraits of total strangers according to its website. His other JC strangers — Enrique and Ben of Heights and Hamilton Park respectively — were also featured here.

This should be good for people looking to sweat it out and have fun after the Monday rush hour! The only things you need to bring are extra-shirt and $6 for donation.
So don’t be cheap! Take advantage of this: learn dancing and at the same time, give something to the community.

Jim of JCLGO emailed me this event in Journal Square Area of Jersey City:
“On Saturday, June 7, from 11am - 4pm, Pride Connections Center of New Jersey is holding a Flea Market to raise funds for its community center in hopes to continue its fifteen year history of community-based services and programs.
Stop by Pride Connection Center, 32 Jones St., Jersey City, NJ, to purchase an item or two and support a great cause.“

There is a nice project on flickr that I found interesting. It is called “100 Strangers“, which is a photo challenge to take 100 portraits of total strangers according to its website.
Guy as in Gee, a Jersey City resident, is a participant of that project. He actually travels a lot, and takes a lot of good pictures like this one featured here on JCRegister.com a few months ago.
Below are his stranger numbers 12 and 13 - Ben and Enrique, with a short description of how he met them. Links to their original photo included.
ENRIQUE
“…I met Enrique as he ate his lunch near Central Ave. In Jersey City. He heard a little bit of a fuss as police responded to an accident involving a possible druken driver.
Enrique was enjoying his pork and corn. He is a painter and probably a Yankee fan. He has been living here for about 6 years after emmigrating from Mexico… Larger photo here. “
BEN
“…Ben is a letter carrier in Jersey City. He has been pounding the pavement for over 10 years. As time goes by, and Ben gets older, he says it gets a little bit harder to climb the stairs…” Larger photo here.
Guy said that he saw Ben on Pavonia Avenue near Hamilton Park.
On a personal note, the project is really a challenge, as it takes a lot of guts to talk to a complete stranger and taking his/her picture. However, imagine this, if 10 JC residents join the project, and they meet 10 different strangers every week, at some point, we will all know everyone and give each other a nod when we meet on the streets.
How cool is that?
How long do you think it will take to cover 240,000 residents (JC Population)?

This is a heads-up for people who go to St. Aedan for masses and do not pickup the bulletin.
There will be no 530PM Mass at St. Aedan’s Church beginning May 25, 2008. The evening mass schedule will resume after Labor Day (September).

Looks like it’s going to be a festive month for JC residents. Mayor Jerramiah Healy sponsors a block party for each ward of Jersey City, which actually started the other night (Tuesday, May 06, 2008). All parties start at 530PM and ends at 8PM.
As you can see from the scanned picture above, the parties are for all ages: kids will have their own art tent, there will be music for teens, and free smoke detectors for seniors.
If you want to attend and join the fun, check the block party schedule below in your area:

I missed the Procession with Palms that took place at 10AM today so there’s no picture of it. The mass photo above was lousy, as I had to do it as discreetly and as quickly as I can. (I was at the church!)
Anyway, for Christians out there, particularly devout Catholics, you probably know that Palm Sunday is the start of Holy Week.
If you are interested, you can participate in some of the Holy Week observations at Saint Aedan Church:
March 20 – Holy Thursday (No other Masses) - 7:00 PM Mass of the Last Supper
March 21 – Good Friday - 6:00 PM Celebration of the Lord’s Passion
March 22 – Holy Saturday - 8:00 PM Easter Vigil (bi-lingual)
See the Full Holy Week Schedule on St. Aedan Parish Website.

This one is a group of parish nurses giving something back to the community. Every first Sunday of the month, they volunteer blood pressure checkup for Saint Aedan parishioners.
If you are a Sunday church-goer at St. Aedan church, you might want to go to the vestibule and meet the nurses for a blood pressure test right after the 10′o clock mass.
JCRegister.com strongly supports this kind of volunteering in our local community, so if you know of any events of this kind, feel free to let me know and I’ll feature it here.
