Jitney Bus on Fire!

Monday, June 16th, 2008

They say Friday the 13th means bad luck. Well, this Jitney Bus in Downtown Jersey City (Marin Boulevard) can attest to that! It looked to me that the the bus overheated last Friday (June 13th). If I see a vehicle on fire, I would not go anywhere near it.

A two-alarm fire on Seaview Avenue (Greenville area) displaced adults and children and killed 3 pitbulls last night (June 3, 2008). Fire Director Armando Roman said that the fire was reported late (around 11PM) and the firefighters “took about two hours to bring the blaze under control“, according to WNBC.

In other news across Hudson River, residents along the Brooklyn and Queens shorelines complained that they smelled something like a burning rubber or plastic. Long Island Fire Departments suspected that the source of the odor might be from this JC fire last night.

Fire: 182 New York Avenue (May 29, 2008)

Friday, May 30th, 2008

Fire at 182 NEw York Avenue, Jersey city
For illustration purpose only. This is not the actual fire.

There was a fire last night (May 29, 2008) at 182 New York Avenue in the Heights area of Jersey City. Eight people were displaced and relocated by Red Cross New Jersey.

The cause is still unknown, but according to the Arson Investigation Unit, the fire is not considered suspicious. Which reminds me of the St. Paul’s Avenue fire last May 11. The owner of that building tried to bribe the inspector, which resulted to his arrest.

A five-alarm fire spread from 272 St. Paul’s Avenue, Jersey City yesterday (May 11, 2008), “burned four homes, destroying two of them and forcing the relocation of 26 people….” according to the news.

It was an unfortunate accident during Mother’s Day, and it took several hours to bring the fire under control.

Fire in Downtown Kills An Elderly Woman

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Fire Downtown JC - Steve Kelly
Photos from Steve Kelley.

Jersey City resident Steve Kelley shares this fire incident that occurred in downtown JC this morning.

I was on my way to the PATH station when I noticed a fire that had just started down the street so I took a number of images. This was a fire at a Jersey City apartment complex. The first floor unit is fully engulfed in smoke and flames…

Smoke Fire Downtown JC - Steve Kelly
Building in smoke!

…at first i thought it was a garage for a car given the gaping holes in the first floor apartment and for some reason was focused on the shots to really process what was happening. At one point the daughter of the woman who died came running by screaming that her mother was trapped inside and would someone please do something. That was when I knew it was a tragic event and turned my attention to the fire engines instead…
