Hoboken comic book store Traders of Babylon will join thousands of comic book shops around the world celebrating the comic book art form on Saturday, May 7th by introducing readers to the wonders of comic books with a day of giveaways.

Traders of Babylon will simultaneously host a signing by independent comic book creator Jamie Zuccaro, who recently released the print edition of his independent comic book Mysterious Visions Presents: Egg Finger & the Cure.

Since its beginning in 2002, Free Comic Book day has become a fan phenomenon, eagerly anticipated each year as resource for discovering graphic treasures.

“The wide array of comic books being published today ensures that readers of all ages — children, teens, and adults – can find something appropriate that will stir their imaginations,” said Stephen Kilnisan, owners of Traders of Babylon.

“Even if you have never picked up a comic book, stop into Traders of Babylon because you never know what you will end up finding.  Plus, you’ll meet comic book creator and artist Jamie Zuccaro.”

Zuccaro’s creation, Egg Finger, became a source of controversy when its dark antagonistic humor came under fire by the popular social network site Facebook. As a finalist in the national Small Press Idol competition, Zuccaro found an audience by setting up a profile page on Facebook so that readers could interact with the main character directly.  In only a few months, Egg Finger received almost one thousand friends and the distinction of having several female fans change their relationship status to ‘in an open relationship with’ and ‘engaged to’ the cartoonish character before the social network censor’s disabled the account for being too edgy.  The profile served its purpose though as people were enthusiastic enough to walk into some NYC comic stores and ask for “that book about eggs.”

Traders of Babylon, Hoboken’s local specialty shop for the comic book and graphic novel community, has always seen the value of smaller independent presses within the larger comic book market. Owner Stephen Kilnisan is an advocate for small presses with alternative distribution and prominently displays an independent comic book section in his store’s new super-sized location at 66 Willow Ave. (Neumann Leathers Building).

Traders of Babylon specializes in both mainstream and independent, alternative-genre comic books and graphic novels, both modern and back-issues.  In addition to literature, Traders of Babylon also carries cards, original artwork, and various comic book memorabilia.

Jamie Zuccaro / Egg Finger: A finalist in the 2010 Small Press Idol competition aimed at discovering the next generation in comic book / graphic novel talent, Egg Finger chronicles the tale of a disgruntled egg after the loss of his egg cream royalties disrupts his lifestyle.  Previously, Zuccaro was an editor for Deadboy Press, an independent comic book company specializing in comic book publications that can be appreciated by readers of all ages.

Free Comic Book Day kicks off at 10:00 am and runs until 4:00 pm. Jamie Zuccaro will be on hand for book signings from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.  Call 201-659-0802 for more information.
