Free Teacher Summer Training Program at Stevens Institute

Here’s a good summer training for middle school teachers in Jersey City and Bayonne: Honeywell will be sponsoring another week-long program this July. Aside from gaining new knowledge, participating educators will receive coaching/classroom support, supplies for their classes, 30 hours of professional development credit, and a $750 stipend. The summer program will be held at Steven’s Institute of Technology in Hoboken.

Inside this entry you will find Tamisha’s email message sent to me the other day. It contains all information you need to know about this program. (Honeywell sponsored similar program last year in Hackensack)

If you know a teacher who’s looking for this kind of seminar, please pass them the word. Deadline for application is next week – April 9, 2009, so act fast. Slots are limited.

Honeywell Teachers for the 21st Century strengthens teachers’ science content knowledge and pedagogy by preparing them to use online, award-winning curriculum resources developed by the Stevens Center for Innovation in Engineering and Science Education (CIESE).  These NJCCCS-aligned curricula engage students in science inquiry, engineering design and problem-solving through use of Internet-based, real-world data and technological design activities.

Teachers participate in hands-on science investigations and team-based engineering design activities in life, earth, and physical science. Activities reinforce topics measured by the NJ ASK8.

Honeywell will sponsor scholarships for 20 teachers, including:

· Tuition for one-week summer institute

· $750 stipend for completion of all activities

Participating teachers and their students will conduct real-world science experiments and participate in engineering design activities that include:

International Boiling Point Project: Students participate in a global experiment  to determine which variable has the greatest impact on the temperature at which water boils.

Human Genetics: Students gather data from their own classrooms and community, then
compare it with thousands of data points to
understand dominant and recessive genetic traits, and their prevalence in the population.

Musical Plates: Students use real-time earthquake and volcano data from dynamic
databases such as the U.S. Geological Survey to explore the relationship among earthquakes, plate tectonics, and volcanoes.

Weather Scope: Students design and build instruments that meteorologists use and create a weather learning log to record their findings.
