  • [...] The weather was gorgeous yesterday, so I suppose everyone was out enjoying the sun. I suppose you have noticed that the square is more brighter than ever. Well, the dilapidated building there has been completely leveled down. Just in time for the Launching of the Renaissance of Journal Square. [...]

I have been living in Jersey City since March of 1997. A lot of has changed since that time. Loew’s Theater was revitalized and re-opened, we got a fountain, new street lanterns, new sidewalk pavement but we also lost the old State Theater (nobody cared to restore that landmark – what a pity!). For 12 years, everyday on my way to and from work I have been passing by the old abandoned hotel on the Square and the slums-like bungalows surrounding it. The landscape of that place was depressing, detestful and pure ugly. I was praying that one day the City of Jersey City would demolish these ruins and build something tasteful and harmonizing with the rest of the Square. Sometimes I thought that I would never see it happen. Even after all the tenants left the falling in ruins bungalows nothing was being done. The “ghost hotel” was standing in the middle of the Square like a scarecrow frightening city inhabitants and its visitors. But it is over. The “haunted hotel” and ugly bungalows are finally demolished! I cannot wait for the NEW Onew Journal Square development to rise above the square and serve all of us living in Jersey City and not only. Hopefully it will be built quicker than the New World Trade Center (it took them eight years to start building!) so we can all enjoy its amenities.

I’ve only lived in Jersey City for about 3 years.  I use to live near Grove street and saw how quickly it has changed for the better.  Now I live near the path in Journal Square and I too would be depressed walking pass those hideous buildings.  When I saw the buildings being torn down, my heart jumped for joy… You can smell the flowers, and feel safer at the same time.   I can’t wait to see this side of town develop.
