Rolando Lavarro for Councilman, JC Ward A Campaign Kick-off
I received an email yesterday from a cyberfriend informing me of this campaign kick-off: Rolando Lavarro will officially announce his candidacy as Councilman of Jersey City, Ward A. It will be held at the Fiesta Grill on West Side Avenue, McGinley Square area of JC. Mr. Lavarro will join the team of Louis Manzo (JC Mayoral candidate)
Mr. Lavarro is a known community activist, legislative pro, and a funding expert. He is the first Filipino-American to run for city council. Too bad his photo wasn’t included in the email sent to me yesterday. It would be nice to put a face to the credentials.

Lavarro has a lifetime of service in support of minorities and youth. He co-founded Sumisibol, a non-profit organization committed to teenagers and their families by promoting Filipino American culture via social and educational programs
Lavarro brings a proficiency in legislative work into his candidacy. He served as Aide to Councilwoman Mary Donnelly, representing the constituents of Ward B in Jersey City, and the Director of Constituent Services for Assemblyman (now Senator) Robert Gordon, representing District 38 of Bergen County.
Lavarro’s qualifications are rooted in community service and diversity. Lavarro worked for nearly ten years with World Education Services, a non-profit organization at the forefront of helping immigrants and foreign students transition to the United States by providing evaluations of foreign academic credentials. He was the Executive Director for the Philippine American Friendship Committee-Community Development Center (PAFCOM-CDC), where he oversaw various intergenerational and cross-cultural programs, such as Healthy Aging and Strengthening Families.
Lavarro is continuously involved in community building, currently serving as the volunteer Coalition Director for the Jersey City Communities that Care Coalition (JCCTCC). Through JCCTCC, Jersey City residents work together to reduce substance abuse in the community so that all of Jersey City’s children – irregardless of race, ethnicity, income or background – can fulfill their potential. The Coalition’s activities include cleaning up vacant lots and parks; broken street light patrol; programs that reinforce positive values such as Red Ribbon Day and Black Marriage Day; and hosting educational forums such as the New Beginnings Youth Conference and Underage Drinking Town Hall Meetings.
Lavarro carries an expertise in securing public funding. He is the Assistant Director for the Office of Grants and Sponsored Programs at New Jersey City University, where he was instrumental in securing $7.2M in federal funding to be used to improve student retention and graduation rates and to renovate science labs. Lavarro proudly represents one of the most diverse higher education institutions in the nation.
Louis Manzo, Jersey City Mayoral candidate, will address a crowd of Lavarro’s supporters and declare Lavarro as his pick for Councilman of Ward A to join his Team Manzo 2009.
“I am excited to bring new blood with exemplary qualifications, such as I have seen with Rolando,” said Manzo. “We need to bring people, with strong public service records and who have the passion for the Jersey City community, into leadership roles that will transform our beloved City. I am also excited to have a team of candidates that reflects the diversity and complexity of Jersey City.”
“I am proud of my Jersey City roots and my record of service to the people of Jersey City,” said Lavarro. “I am happy to join Lou and his team and look forward to bringing integrity, coalition-building, and my diverse experiences and perspectives to improve the quality of life of Ward A residents and the entire Jersey City community. I will be accessible to all the people of Jersey City and hear their concerns. I will be accountable to my constituents and I will answer to them directly. Jersey City desperately needs new leadership and a new vision to lead us into the 21st century. I hope the people of Jersey City will entrust me and our entire team with their vote so we can do just that. ”
