FEEDING THE HUNGRY THIS THANKSGIVING
Where to get a free meal, donate food, or volunteer

Reporter Staff WriterThis Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, as well as the days before the holiday, there are various venues across Hudson County serving meals to the less fortunate. Some venues need volunteers or food donations.
To make sure of their needs, please first call the respective restaurant, shelter, or church. The phone numbers are included at the end of each listing.
No time to volunteer? Take a couple cans of cranberry sauce or even a bag of plates to one of the agencies below. Every bit helps.
Here is where to get a meal or help out, by town:
Hudson County Community College, located at 26 Journal Square in Jersey City, is conducting a Thanksgiving food drive at the Journal Square campus until Monday, Nov. 24. The college is asking for donations of canned and non-perishable foods. They can be brought to the college’s 25 Journal Square location on the first floor, near the Journal Square PATH station. The donations will benefit St. Lucy’s Shelter, a homeless shelter on Grove Street in Jersey City.
Speaking of the shelter, St. Lucy’s Shelter, 619 Grove St., Jersey City, will hold its annual Thanksgiving dinner for anyone in need on Thanksgiving Day at 4:30 p.m. The shelter accepts donations of food, supermarket gift certificates, winter clothing, and money throughout the year. Donations may be dropped off right at the center on Grove Street. For more information, call (201) 656-7201.
The Hard Grove Café on Grove Street in Jersey City, near the Grove Street PATH station, is serving their annual Thanksgiving Day meal for the needy this year. Interested people should come in between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. and say they are there for the Thanksgiving meal. Volunteers also are welcome. The tradition began at the restaurant approximately 10 years ago when former owner Dominick Santana saw a man putting coins together for his meal, and gave him a free meal. City Councilman Steve Lipski and his wife Yraida, along with Coptic Community Services, will host a traditional, complimentary Thanksgiving Dinner from noon to 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. The dinner will be held at the Coptic Community Center at 861 Bergen Ave. in Jersey City. For more information or to volunteer, call (201) 547-5159.
Jimmy King’s Civic Association in Jersey City will be having their 11th Annual Thanksgiving Dinner from the homeless and shut-ins. Dinner will be served at the Sharing Place at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Hall at 440 Hoboken Ave., Jersey City from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. The Iron Monkey at 97 Greene St., in downtown Jersey City is opening its doors at 1 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day for a free, traditional Thanksgiving meal served in the second-floor dining room. A colorful plate of donated food including turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, and side vegetables will be served with a choice of soda, juice, or coffee. Homemade pumpkin pie is for dessert. Volunteers are needed to help serve dinner from 1 to 6 p.m. Contact the restaurant at (201) 435-5756 for more information.
The Heavenly Temple Community Outreach Food Pantry will hold a dinner for the public on Thanksgiving Day from noon to 2 p.m. at 15-21 Martin Luther King Dr. For more information, call (201) 780-1420 or (201) 332-8974.
The Wade Street Wonders Community Organization is holding a dinner for the public on Thanksgiving Day at the New Day Rehoboth Church of Christ, 126 Rutgers Ave., from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monetary donations are also accepted. Also, in time for Thanksgiving, the supermarket chain ShopRite made an emergency donation of $150,000 of food items to Community FoodBank of New Jersey and food banks in Hudson County including one operated by New City Kids Church in Jersey City and the Palisades Emergency Residence Corporation (PERC) in Union City.
