United Water will be turning off the spigots to a portion of the Journal Square section of Jersey City Saturday in the first of four shutdowns over the coming month, United Water announced today.

Residents may lose pressure or have no water as the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority shuts off a 20-inch water main at 5 a.m. The main will remain off for the whole day, officials say. Saturday’s closure will affect residents on Newkirk Street between Summit Avenue and Baldwin Avenue, and on Summit Avenue between Academy Street and Sip Avenue.

The project to replace six valves over the coming months will require further shutdowns on future Saturdays, including at Summit Avenue and Newkirk Street (Nov. 15), at Summit Avenue and Academy Street (Nov. 22) and at Baldwin Avenue and Newkirk Street (Dec. 6).

United Water officials say that the water may be discolored, but is safe. They recommend running it until it clears for drinking, cooking or washing clothes. They recommend filling containers and bath tubs Friday to use the following day.
