Late Night Carjacking: Failed

Streetview of Walgreens at Communipaw and JFK Blvd.
I frequent Walgreen’s at the corner of Communipaw Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard — and since it is open 24/7, I even go there very late at night. I guess I have to be extremely vigilant the next time I buy something from there.
Last Sunday, Eliza Guevarra, a 21-years old nursing student of Hudson County Community College, successfully avoided an attempted carjacking because of her “grace under pressure.”
Reports said she pulled into the Walgreens parking lot and as soon as she opened her door the man put the gun to her head, saying “Get in the car or I will pop you…” . The man wanted the car so he can drive to Newark.
Luckily, she was able to maintain her poise and was able to convince him that she will drive him to Newark if he put his gun down. The man complied and walked around the passenger side. And as soon as he got in the car, Eliza jumped out and ran into the store to seek help.
…She said the man panicked at that point, picked up the gun and fled on foot toward Harrison Avenue. Guevarra said there were three people very close to her car during the incident, but none came to her aid or called police…

Why is the crime in Jersey City out of control these days?
June 25th, 2008 at 5:52 am
Probably because it’s summer.
These criminals are like bugs: they hibernate in the winter, and come out in the summer pestering the community.

I think it’s disgusting that no one else came to her aid. At the very least somebody could have been dialing 911 and jotting down a license plate number.

I agree. In the news, Eliza sounded like she couldn’t believe it as well. I imagine four or five people in the area when the incident happened. Probably they got scared when they saw the gun.

What is the story on the crime in JC? I have been considering an apt off Communipaw near the light rail, but I keep hearing more bad things about JC rather than good. Can you shed any light? I saw an old newspaper article online about a curfew imposed due to the crime. Have the police/city gov. done anything to resolve the issues to better protect the citizens?

The thing about JC is that this area, the West Side/Marion/Greenville/Heights area, is pretty.. well.. I wouldn’t say ‘ridden’ with crime, but you get the idea. It’s really the historical downtown/financial district that’s safest and seems to be getting all the money and attention. You can definitely live here safely, it’s just JC is so big you have to choose the right part. And downtown/financial is expensive.

I’ve lived in the Communipaw/Monticello area for over 20 years. I’m a white female. Where ever you are, you have to be careful. This area is rich in good neighbors - not sure that can be said of downtown.
A price always needs to be paid - it just depends on what price one is talking about.
