Memorial Day Observances in Jersey City

Happy Memorial Day! Today we commemorate the fallen heroes and we honor the brave men and woman who defended the country.

There are several observances for today, one of them is in the Historic Speer Cemetery on Vroom Street, in the Journal Square area of Jersey City. Lincoln Association of Jersey city gathered there and held a ceremony honoring the Civil War veterans buried there.

I had the chance to talk to the president, Ms. Ann McGovern. She told me that this is an annual event and they choose different cemetery yearly to honor our heroes.

9 a.m. – Proclamations given to Polish War Veterans, Jersey Avenue and Sixth Street.

9:30 a.m. – The Lafayette Amvets Post 33 will march throughout the Lafayette area, followed by Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Byzantine Church, 231 Pacific Ave., where the deceased members of the post will be honored. For information, call 201-333-9042.

11 a.m. – Proclamation to be given to the Sgt. Anthony Block Association, Palisade Avenue. For information, call 201-659-8059.

11 a.m. The Lincoln Association of Jersey City will meet in Speer Cemetery, Vroom Street and Bergen Avenue, to honor Civil War veterans buried there. All are invited to attend.

Noon – Proclamations to be given to the Filipino War Veterans, Second Street and Manila Avenue.

3 p.m. – Proclamations to be given at Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Pershing Field.
