Raccoons and Possums Invade JSQ?

Raccoons and possums invade Journal Square, Jersey City

Bridgette Hall, a JCRegister reader, emailed me today about her concerns on the increasing number of wildlife animals like possums and raccoons in Journal Square area of Jersey City:

“Hello, I live in JSQ behind the courthouse on summit avenue and I have a major problem with possums and racoons passing through and sometimes hanging out in my backyard, along with the million stray cats, birds, etc. I was wondering if other folks in jsq have this problem.”

Do you see this influx of wildlife animals in your area? What do you think is the best way to solve this problem?

  • Last summer when I moved in to the Hamilton Park neighborhood, we would see oppossums coming around when we were BBQing. Since then, our upstairs neighbors have moved in, along with a big dog they let out in our yard. The number of stray cats hanging out in our yard has vastly diminished since then, so I’m assuming the other wildlife will stear clear now, too. But you never know. Who can resist the aroma of grilled veggie burgers? ;-)

Thank you… I currently reside with a kitty who is curious but will not venture out into the yard (zoo). I will co-exist with these guys until they move on to another property…

do you not like other wildlife to share the yard?……they do deserve to go where they want as long as its not in your home.

I could share their yard with them. I’m just suprised at how many different animals (possums and raccoons especially) live in the jsq area.
