Excellent Home-made Polish Food @ Sava Polish Deli on Grove Street
If you haven’t been to Sava Polish Deli since it moved to Grove Street last month, now is the right time to be there. I’ve been reading a lot of excellent reviews on this deli, but the main concern of the residents is: “Will Sava Polish Deli survive the high rent?”

JC Freelance writer Joe Harkins wrote (02/12/2008):
…The owner is a sweet, charming and sincere woman named Jadwiga (yahd-vee’-gah). She was almost in tears. If I understood her correctly (her English has limits) I was her first customer of the afternoon. The buffet looked it. The trays were full and appeared untouched.
She did say that the past weekend was “OK” but she will not survive for long given the situation she has. Since she was open about it, and offered the information without my asking - beyond a “how’s business?” - I will repeat what she told me.
At this point, she can’t pay next month’s rent. She says her landlord has already told her he will evict if she doesn’t…
Joe wrote that a month ago. Sava Polish Deli survived the first month and it is still open — alive and kickin’. I’m sure Joe and downtown JC residents are happy about it. However, Sava’s continued existence really depends on you and me.
Meanwhile, here’s what they have to say about the deli:
…OMG, it was good - good, hearty food on a cold day! Can’t wait to go back and try the kielbasa, but I need to pace myself. There are only so many hours I can spend at the gym!
-JadedJCIt’s great to have a place like Sava in walk distance. Great addition in downtown!
-3rdandwild… They have a variety of hearty, delicious, Polish home cooked food, in serving trays, hot and ready to eat. It’s cafeteria style, so no waiter to tip. I just ate there and I recommend it…
-sandmanI felt like I was at a friend’s house and her grandmother was making me a home cooked meal. Definitely worth checking out.

Top Notch Comfort Food.
-vigilanteFolks, if you like cheap, delicious, filling food then go support Sava’s. Its a great alternative to the pricier, yuppier places that have opened up. This place is so old school it could have been around decades ago. Plus, Sava is a really nice, cool person and it’s good to have her in the neighborhood. I’ve been trying everything on the menu and I can’t get enough. This place rocks.
-jyscorpLOVE IT AND HUGE THUMBS UP!!!!!! I can’t wait to see this place full, it’s got to get busier, people, please go, I don’t want to see this place leave us!

Kielbasa bliss

Lunch Specials. Cheap Prices.

The steam table. Prepared fresh to order. The chicken soup and cold borsht are popular.

Meat loaf, kielbasa/kraut and rice

Polish soul food: home made pierogies, meat loaf and stuffed cabbage
Another batch of happy customers!
…I don’t live in JC, but work right down the street. Let me tell you how nice it was to get a great home cooked meal - for $5 I got kielbasa, sauerkraut, and mashed potatoes. Everything was delicious - I’ve never had sauerkraut that good before.
-Draper185…I just finished eating my first meal from Savas. I don’t think I’ve had kielbasa in almost 20 years, but this was absolutely delish!! I ordered 6 pierogies, kielbasa, and saurkraut. Total $8. All I can say after years of eating Mrs. T’s frozen pierogies - there is NOTHING Like a real home made pierogie.
-simplify…Finally tried Sava. It is excellent Polish home cooking. It is reasonably priced. This is the kind of restaurant that makes Jersey City a good place. If the quality is consistent, this will be a serious contender for my favorite restaurant in Jersey City.
