Building Abandoned for a Decade Collapsed In Newark

Newark Building Collapsed This is hard to comprehend. When you see a building like the one in the picture, you have to report it to authorities. However, when residents already did their part, the ball is in the hands of city officials.

Unfortunately, Newark officials seemed too busy to take care of this charred building which had been sitting there for 10 years waiting for an accident to happen.

So I wondered: Has the same incident happened in Jersey City?

Just a few of days ago, a building tilted and was demolished right away, thanks to residents who reported it, and most especially to the authorities who responded promptly.

Going back to Newark, you have to wonder why it took 10 long years for the building to be demolished.

Below is a snippet of the news from yesterday:

… The building, on 4th Street between Dickerson Street and Sussex Avenue, was abandoned since being gutted by a fire about 10 years ago, neighbors said.

“I thought the roof was coming down,” said Angel Santos, who lives next door in the house damaged by falling planks.

Neighbors accused city officials of ignoring requests to have the former three-family house demolished.

“We have been trying for a long time to get the city to tear it down, but for some reason it just doesn’t happen,” said Louise Jennings, who has lived across the street from the house for about four years….
