BALLY Total Fitness - Jersey City (near Journal Square)

Bally Jersey City journal square

UPDATE (June 17, 2008) : Click here for the opening date of the gym

Original Post : Feb. 28 2008

It’s hard not to notice this construction site whenever you walk or drive by Bergen Avenue from Journal Square, or from any local establishment around the area. If you are commuting, this BALLYs is a good 5-minute warm-up walk from the PATH Train.

While JC Construction says the gym is a good addition to the area, I have heard a bad review of BALLY from one Jersey City resident, but I’ll post it in details once this branch has opened in Summer. (If I see strong demand from Google Search, I am going to post the review).

How about you, have you tried BALLY’s before? What’s your take?

I’m really excited for this branch to open in Jersey City. I trek to Union City for that Ballys or go in Manhattan and this will just be a hop and skip from my place. I’m concerned about how they’ll do parking but I’m still really excited.

  2. Hi D.Bennett,

Parking will be an issue here. You’ll have to go around the block to find available street parking spots. There are a few private parking on Sip Avenue, though… 5-minutes walk away from this BALLY.

  3. I’m glad that Jersey City residents will have
“their own” Ballys. Going to Union City is not that bad but the place is always crowded and the wait for equipment at times is so bad that you don’t feel like working out.
Good location and good for the Journal Square area, bringing xtra life and energey to the Square.

  4. I usually go to the one on 19th/6th in Manhattan, but having one around the corner will be great.

  5. I cant wait, this would be soooooo convenient!! about time!

  6. Finally a Ballys in Jersey City, I would have preferred one downtown (it would probably be bigger). But all in all this is much better than going to Union City or Manhattan. No I have no excuses.

  7. […] rent this spot? We have local sneakers store and beauty shop to its right; Blimpie to its left; soon-to-open Bally Total Fitness, UPS Store, and RadioShack right […]

  8. I go to the bally in north berge. I am REALLy excited about this one opening, but I did hear a rumor that instead of new equipment, we will be getting the old equipment and the old lockers they took out of the north bergen location. If this is the case I think we should object and demand new equipment. We pay the same as everyone else. Parking will be a problem but a lot of people can walk or bike to the square.

  9. I think it sucks. I train in Wayne, and I’m tired of Bally’s taking our money to put somewhere else. Jersey City already has Hoboken park, which is where everyone jogs, so there won’t be a big demand for a gym over there. What Bally’s need to do is update our Wayne gym and stop worrying about expanding, for we were here first for many years!

  10. I am really excited about ballys comin to jersey city, but i dono what i am gona do for the parking. i really dont want to pay money for the parking and obviously since a lot of people will be going to this location from around jersey city , so all the street parking will be taken :( . i am afraid i will have to spend 10-15 minutes and gas to search for the parking spot every time i go there . oh well… its better then nothing. i am still excited.

If you have two legs, JOGGING is a great way to get to the gym, and requires NO parking! It’s free!

How far is JC from coast to coast? Under 2.5 miles?

  12. I think its fantastic that we’re getting a real gym in a neglected part of JC. Sorry yuppies can’t have all the amenities Downtown. Locals of the Greenville/Westside/Heights area need this bad. I was good living in Greenville using NJCU’s gym, but then I moved to the Heights and all we got up here is woman’s only gyms and Bally’s in NB that’s out of the way. So I’m counting down until the doors open. I can walk right over from the PATH station after work and get a good workout in. No parking necessary. Perfect.

  13. Mr. Health, JC from coast to coast is more than 2.5 miles… my rough estimate: from JSQ to Greenville = 3 miles.

  14. does anyone know exactly when the new bally’s in JC will open?  bally website only says June 2008.  is it open yet?

  15. Laurie, according to the lady I spoke to last February, Bally’s going to open this July, not June… I’ll contact them again to verify. ;)

  16. the latest update is they r going to open in first or second week of august 2008

  17. thanks for the update guys!

  18. […] The lady that I talked to told me they will open late August or early September. Praveen, a JCRegister.com visitor, commented the same thing. […]

  19. UPDATE : I made a separate post for BALLY.

  20. Hi all great information here and good thread to comment on. Can I ask though - how did you get this picked up and into google news? Very impressive that this blog is syndicated through Google and is it something that is just up to Google or you actively created? Obviously this is a popular blog with great data so well done on your seo success..

  21. I peeked inside last wk. (8/06/08).  I was and am still disappointed that the construction is still underway.!  What right??!  The outside sign finally went up but, if you know anything about anything…I read a thread in the Hudson Reporter that Bally’s filed for bankruptcy.  They do plan to pay their employees and no members are or will be hurt in this matter.  In addition, I am trying to put two and two together here but this may be the reason for the delay in the Grand opening.  Then again you have to think if you have lived in this neighborhood…that for one thing they are building from what used to be a RESTAURANT.  Lots and Lots of renovations and reconstruction, I am very sure.  I would say with all the health codes and violations they may endure they will probably open late September early October.  The floors, and surroundings did not look finished but I know that would be easy, right?

who is to say?  As long as we all get a nice gym nearby!

    Toodles.  *)

  22. I just called today and found out that it will open in November. Boooooo.

  23. […] Total Fitness started the construction of its business site way back February this year. It even had a sign that said it will open Summer of […]

  24. sadly, this is the place that used to be the beautiful art deco gem canton tea garden, the only j.c. restaurant i can think of with decor dating back to the 1930s. i shudder to think of the remodel…
