POST OFFICE Journal Square (JSQ) Branch is too crowded
If you are a local resident, wanting to mail your letters, all you have to do is go to the nearest blue mailboxes near your area and drop off your letters there. But if you need to go to the postal office, to pickup an undelivered documents, mail, parcels or whatever, or mail packages, the Journal Square Branch (JSQ) will give you a headache.
The office opens at 7am, but I’ve never been there during that time so I can not comment on that. However, I can comment on how bad the crowd situation is at Post Office JSQ Branch during normal working hours, which is from 8am – 5pm.
So read ahead and find out why…
I am 100%positive that if you are reading this, you will agree with me. The queue inside the office is so long, you are going to finish a book before you are in front of the window. And speaking of windows, they have 4 windows and 1 extra for package and parcel pickups. So there are 5 total windows. Problem is, for some unknown reasons, only 2 of them at the most are occupied by staff. The picture, which was taken December 12th, 2007, around 5PM, doesn’t do justice to the real situation.
The last time I’ve been there, December of 2007, late in the afternoon, the line was so long it already blocked the entrance. One guy complained, “How come there are only 2 windows open?” I wish I knew the answer. We were in the line that it took us until the closing time (5pm). The supervisor (a nice lady) was in-charge of the holding and locking the door so nobody can enter, but she opened it for people who were leaving. The same guy who was already feeling antsy commented loudly again: “This office has a staffing problem!”
It was obvious, the 2 windows out of 5 will not get it done. Another postal office authority (this time a guy) went out to be in-charge of the door. He asked the guy to calm down by saying: “Sir, it is December, this time of the year is normally busy…”
But the guy answered, “It is always like this everyday!”
And the office staff didn’t answer.
I waited for another 30-minutes to be served. I wanted to mail a letter but wasn’t sure how many stamps I needed so I had to get my mail weighed. At the same time, I bought a LOT of stamps so I don’t have to be there again until I ran out of stamps. The postal office has vending machine, but for those who are accustomed to lining up just for stamps, learn to use the machine and don’t be a part of the crowd that this branch couldn’t handle.
So you ask, why write now? Because I happened to stop by the post office JSQ Branch today and I noticed that it is still crowded over there. Therefore, the situation hasn’t been rectified yet.
If I have the power, I would add more staff to this branch in order to speed up the process and to make their customers happy. Right now, I can understand the guy who complained. It is really frustrating especially that this branch is at the heart of Jersey City. Time-permitting, I will visit other offices and compare them to the Journal Square Branch if there are any similarities and differences.

Here it is 2 yrs later after this article was written and it’s the same issue at this particular post office..Every single time that I go there are only 2 windows open..I don’t understand it. I was there last week..Same thing..The Post office at Exchange Place is nothing like this..Perhaps it’s because majority of the people that live there are white whereas the JSQ branch is in a more urban area..I dont know what to make of it..But I do know it’s beyond frusterating…
